About Dental Implants

Dental implants are small titanium screws that are placed in the jaw and onto which a prosthetic crown is placed as a substitute for missing teeth. Because they are anchored in the jaw, dental implants function almost exactly like natural teeth in terms of biting, chewing and aesthetics. This is a major improvement for most patients when compared to dentures and bridges, which have limited strength and can slip or fall out.

Benefits of Dental Implants

  • No dietary restrictions
  • Protect the jawbone
  • Fixed – won’t slip or fall out
  • Last a lifetime
  • Look and feel totally natural

Dental Implants for Health

A very important advantage that dental implants have over traditional replacement methods is that they protect from jawbone loss by providing regular stimulation to the jawbone through chewing and biting. By contrast, patients with bridges and dentures experience severe jawbone loss over the years, beginning immediately with the loss of their tooth.

Dental Implants: The Procedure

The dental implants process starts with a consultation and 3-D imaging to determine your needs and desires for treatment. In some cases, bone grafting is required prior to implant surgery to prepare the site. Once there is adequate bone mass, dental implant surgery is performed. This is when we insert the implant screw into the jawbone. The procedure takes just about an hour. After the implant is placed, the site is left to heal for several months while the titanium screw osseointegrates (bonds) with the bone. When osseointegration is complete, you will return to us and we will attach a connecting piece called an abutment to the implant. Then you will return to your general dentist for the final crown.
